Miconazole, Cream

The FDA (U.S. Food & Drug Administration) has approved miconazole topical lotions, creams, and sprays for use in dogs and cats to treat superficial yeast skin infections thatrespond to this medicine. The FDA allows veterinarians to prescribe products containing this drug in different species or for other conditions in certain situations. You and your veterinarian can discuss why this drug is the most appropriate choice.

Miconazole medication is used to treat skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and other fungal skin infections (candidiasis). This medication is an azole antifungal. It works by stopping the growth of yeast (fungus) that causes the infection. Miconazole is also used to treat vaginal yeast infections. Miconazole reduces vaginal burning, itching, and discharge that may occur with this condition.

Indications/Actions:

Topical miconazole has activity against dermatophytes and yeast. It is especially effective for the treatment of Malassezia dermatitis. Patients with severe, generalized infections may require systemic therapy. Lotions, sprays, and creams are generally used for localized lesions associated with Malassezia spp or dermatophytes. Topical miconazole products are generally ineffective (or minimally effective) when used alone for dermatophytosis; adjunctive systemic treatment is usually required.

Miconazole’s actions are a result of altering permeability of fungal cellular membranes and interfering with peroxisomal and mitochondrial enzymes, leading to intracellular necrosis. Miconazole products are fungicidal with repeated application. 

Suggested Dosages/Use:

If using spray, creams, lotions, or wipes/pads: 1-2 times a day applications. If using a shampoo or conditioner: daily to weekly baths; leave in contact with skin for at least 10 minutes prior to rinsing. For veterinary products, refer to product label for details on individual use.

What are the side effects of this medication?

Miconazole topical medications are usually well tolerated.

Side effects that may be serious orindicate a serious problem:

• Infections that do not appear to be healing within the first 2 weeks.
• Loss of appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea.

If you see any of these signs, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Precautions/Adverse Effects:

Avoid contact with eyes. Clients should wash hands after application or wear gloves when applying. Do not allow animal to lick or chew at affected areas for at least 20-30 minutes after application.

Skin irritation is possible but unlikely to occur, but in very inflamed, eroded to ulcerated skin, the pledgets, wipes, towelettes, and spray containing alcohol (Malaseb®) can be severely irritating.
